the solubility of a compound depends upon the cations or anions present in the compound. chloride ions are much more soluble in water than fluoride ions. that's why MgCl2 is more soluble in water than MgF2

Explanation:

In case of MgF_{2}, the fluorine atom is smaller in size as compared to magnesium. As a result, fluorine will be more closer to magnesium, thus, there will be strong formation of bond.

Whereas in case of MgCl_{2}, size of both magnesium and chlorine are almost similar. So, there is no strong bonding between both the atoms as a result, it is easy to break the bond between magnesium and chlorine.

Hence, MgCl_{2} has much greater solubility as compared to MgF_{2}.
