why some substance burn with a flame while some burn without a flame?

the substances which get surprised before burning burnt with flame eg. wax and those who does not get vaporized before. burns without flame eg coal

some substances that do not burn with flame shows incomplete combustion and burn without flame because they do no get sufficient supply of oxygen and those who burn with flame show complete combustion
