The speed of meteor increase when coming toward the earths surface because there is no gravity present in the outer space and the earths gravity attract the meteor towards the earth's surface and gravity continuously accelerate the meteor so that the speed of meteor increases when coming near earth's surface

generally meteor freely move in a space but sometime they are attracted by the gravitational force of earth when they are coming to the earth the gravitational force of the increases and this change the velocity of the Meteor.
some of river meteor which do not completely ban on entering the Earth atmosphere and reach the the Earth's surface are called meteorites
