Because at least for me, these are two different types of activity. It is not just sprinters that don't breathe, look at weightlifters, they also don't breathe when they are lifting. And I think there are a lot of things people do that they don't breathe until afterwards. This is something that you can test yourself. I think even something like push ups will show that you can't do them both at the same time. Speaking just for myself, I have about4–6 different speeds I can run at, and I can continue to breathe in all but two of them. When I am running well I have discovered that I have another 'gear' I can go into. It feels like shifting into 'overdrive'’. I am running really hard, feeling like I am going as fast as Ican, so I am not breathing, and about 40 yards in I feel like I speed up. As if I shift into overdrive, it is something that is completely automatic, but once again I don't breathe then either. But all the gears I have up to that speed, then yes I am able to breathe.
