Oxygen and sulphur belongs to same group but O is O2 whereas S is S8
This is because of overlapping.
since size of oxygen is small so π bond overlapping takes place but in case of sulphur sideon overlapping is not sufficient to hold S2 .
that's why sulphur exists in S8 form and Oxygen exist in O2 form.
