Whatever the historical origin may be, Tea was discovered growing wild in Assam by the now-unknown Bruce brothers in 1826. Tea was promoted very well by the government, right from Lord William Bentick onward; Chinese plants were purchased and cultivated in parts of India. The Assam Tea Company was formed in 1839, and private companies followed suit. Tea enterprises were so successful that there was even a crash sometime in the 1860s.
