why teenagers be treated like adults
Answers
They are in this stage where they have complex thoughts and emotions. Some of which are more mature and adult. Others are still quite juvenile and childlike. The problem is, we expect them to now behave adults when it suits us. Manners, responsibly, moral decisions, prioritizing.
After all, we've seen they're capable of achieving these expectations (while in their mature mindset) but then scoff when they demand respect and treatment as an adult in such a childlike way (pouting, whining, tantrums.)
They're in limbo. It's the job of the parent to keep in close touch and conversation with where their child's state of mind is and communicate from there.
Try to stay away from, “you're 14 years old! Why would you have a curfew of 1am???”
Instead try something like, “I am the mother of an 8th grade girl. I cannot stay up that late worrying about you.”
