Temples were built by rulers to ensure that people of their kingdom do not feel left out and offer total support to the rulers.
On the other hand breaking of temples seemed to be more for plundering wealth.
History repeats itself first as tragedy and second as farce.

Answer:
Temples were beautifully constructed because they were places of worship. They were also meant to demonstrate the power, wealth and devotion of the patron. As each new dynasty came to power, kings wanted to emphasise their moral right to be rulers. Constructing places of worship provided rulers with the chance to proclaim their close relationship with God, especially important in an age of rapid political change.
