Why tertiary alcohols can not give positive iodoform even if it has terminal methyl group

● Iodiform test -
- Iodoform test is used for detection of methyl ketones.
RCOCH3 + I2 + 3NaOH --> RCOONa + 2NaI + 3H2O
- Primary alcohol (only ethanol) and some secondary alcohols gets converted to methyl ketones during reaction thus gives +ve iodoform test.

● Why tertiary alcohols can not give positive iodoform test -
- As tertiary alcohols don't have H-atom attached to C-atom with -OH group, they get converted to alkenes (instead of ketones) under reaction conditions.
- Therefore, tertiary alcohols can't give +ve iodoform reaction.
