Thalassemia is genetic autosomal defect, which affects the synthesis of globin polypeptide in RBC. Absence or reduced synthesis of one of the globin chain will lead to excessive of other and this may lead to precipitation and damage to the RBC causing it's lysis and hence anaemia.

So regular blood transfusion is required to maintain equal no of globin polypeptides...
