Earth's average surface gravity is about 9.8 meters per second per second. ... The Moon's surface gravity is weaker because it is far less massive than Earth. A body's surface gravity is proportional to its mass, but inversely proportional to the square of its radius...

The acceleration due to gravity of the earth is more than that of the moon because the moon has a lesser mass than the earth.

  • Gravity is a force by which a planet or object draws other objects towards its centre.
  • According to Newton's Universal law of Gravitation,

F = G\frac{m_{1} m_{2} }{r^{2} }, where F = gravitational force of the object

  • This means that the gravitational force of an object is directly proportional to the mass of the object and inversely.
  • Hence, the lesser the mass of an object is, the lesser the gravitational force it exerts over other bodies.
  • Considering that the moon has very less mass as compared to the earth, the acceleration due to the gravity of the moon is less than that of the earth.
  • It is known that the acceleration due to gravity of the moon is approximately a mere 1/6th of the acceleration due to gravity of the earth.
