Even a DC motor has AC current in the armature coils, because of the commutator. The magnetic field in the armature core needs to be able to reverse direction on every rotation. Soft iron concentrates the magnetic field but does not remain magnetized, allowing it to reverse.
But AC will induce wasteful eddy currents in the armature core because the iron is a conductor and will act as a shorted turn. So the armature is made up of thin insulated laminations. Also, the laminations are easily punched out of sheet metal,
