The art of weaving like many other indegenous forms of art, is in danger for a number of reasons:
1. Lack of good marketing- There is a lack of marketing knowledge among the weavers. So, they rely on middlemen to get their products sold. These middlemen exploit the weavers. The products are sold at high rates, but the weavers are paid very little.
2. Not sustainable- Since the weavers do not earn much, they often struggle to make ends meet. This leads them to quit weaving and take up jobs which pay better, so that they are able to support their families.
3. General preference for cheaper products- Since woven products are handmade, they are time consuming and labour intensive and are more expensive than factory made goods. A general consumer looks for the cheapest options and so there are not many takers for hand woven garments and accessories.
Though the government offers subsidies to such industries, it is not enough, until the general public decides to support the traditional craftsmen and artisans in a big way.
