when a bird sits on an electric pole, the current passing through the wire also passes through the bird's body as it conducts electricity. since it does not transmit this current flowing through its body to any physical object (as it is in contact with the wire alone) it does not get electrocuded. but if it were to touch another object or things around it such as wall, ground or a different wire, it would get electrocuded and as a result, it would die.
