covalent bond strength is roughly correlated with bond order because higher order bonds involve a great amount of electron density between the bonded atoms.think of electron density as the Glue that holds the atoms together.in short because there is more glow between the atoms of double bond it takes more energy to pull apart to form separate atoms compared to a single bond involving the same elements.that's why double bond is more stronger than single bond.
