Colonial rule banned shifting cultivation because colonial people thought that in shifting cultivation when the trees were burn it would spread and whole forest would burn. And for leaving the area undisturbed it would lose fertility. And it was very easy for them to collect taxes.
The result was that :-
Many shifting cultivators were not allowed to move from one place to another and they were forced to live at a particular place. Many of them secretly entered the forests to collect timver, wood, medicine. And many more of them
left the place and gone to cities to work in factories.
