Why the colonies of yeast do not multiply in water but multiply in sugar solution?

The yeast respire from the sugar solution and multiples because of the energy contained in it.

There is no such energy source in water so that's why yeast can't multiply.

Sugar provides energy for sustaining all life activities in yeasts. In water, it fails to reproduce because of inadequate energy in its cells.
