The fusion of sperm and ova does not occur during pregnancy because-

  • The fusion of two gametes, sperm and ova is fertilisation and the zygote thus formed is implanted in the uterus.
  • Fertilisation between the two gametes occurs in the ampullary-isthmic junction.
  • During pregnancy there is a high level of progesterone is regulated in the blood. progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum and is responsible for maintaining pregnancy.
  • So, for the fusion of sperm and ova, fewer progesterone conditions are required as compared to that in pregnancy.
