Democracies are measured by the number of voters. India has the largest number. I am discounting make-believe democracies like the "People's Republic of China".
India became the world's largest democracy since independence. The wise people of the world had given us 10-15 years before breaking apart into a hundred countries in an orgy of violence.

Indian democracy is called as the world’s largest democracy. Democracy is the government of the people. Thus, larger the number of people involved in the democratic government, larger is the democracy. India is second largest country in terms of population, after the China. But the China doesn't have complete democracy. Hence, India remains with the largest country (in terms of population). People participate in democratic process at various levels, local ,state and national level. Therefore India is termed as the largest democratic country.
