Because northern River are perennial not seasonal and are wide in size and southern River are short in size

it is because the rivers in northern India are perennial and carry water throughout the year allowing developed waterways. whereas the rivers in southern India are non perennial and dry up in the hot season and so they can't allow water transport throughout the year
