the white light is actully made up of seven different colours. The dispersion of colour is called Spectrum . the light split into Spectrum when it hits the glass walls of the prism. when white light travels through the prism air enters the glass or the water ,the colour bends and thus splitting the lights into the seven colours of the rainbow

The phenomenon of splitting up of light when it enters a prism is known as dispersion, and the band of colours seen as a result of dispersion is known as spectrum. The sequence of VIBGYOR only is formed because dispersion takes place due to the change in the speed of light and deviation of different colours with wavelength. The colours that are seen all have different and constant wavelength. Deviation of a specific colour of light is inversely proportional to its wavelength. So, the colour with the least wavelength deviates the most and the colour with the highest wavelength deviates the least, thus forming only one regular sequence, i.e.,vibgyor.
