Why the lines of longitudes called meridians of longitude and lines of latitudes called parallels of latitude?​

Explanation:

Longitudes are known as meridians because in Geographical sense, meridians are great circles which are not parallel to each other but intersect each other at the North and the South Poles. Same stands true of the longitudes. All longitudes are great circles which meet at the Poles.

The imaginary lines running through the east-west of the Earth are called Parallels of Latitude as they run parallel to each other and the lines running to the north-south of the Earth are called Meridians of Longitude as they are not parallel to each other but intersect at the poles.
