Why the literacy rate of female is less than the male

I thought that everyone knew the reasons. Girls were not sent to schools in olden days. The ratio of girls to boys in schools has improved over the years. But the literacy rate is the sum total of all age groups. When one looks at the literacy rates by age group it can be seen that the gap is coming down. The national level data for literacy rates show that the difference is only about 2 per cent for the age group 10–14 years while it is about 5% for those aged 15–19 , 11% for the age group 20–24, etc.
