Why the man is called 'the American' in "Hills like white elephants"? Illustrate.

Hemingway calls the person as "The American" because he wanted to keep him nameless, or just to present him as projection of an average American. This was the author's way of showing how selfish an average American could be, without pointing out to a specific person.
