oh buddy...let me tell u...
mercury is a metal ...actually the only known metal..to be liquid at normal room temperature...i guess u would be knowing this..
nd to add in more ... its area increases wid increase in temperature...area here means its spreadout..so when a thermometer is used it senses the body temperature nd rises accordingly...the thermometer is scaled accordingly...so we get to know about the normal temperature ..
but nowadayzz it has been rectified that mercury is little poisnous ..so is ia not being used...instead of this a digital thermometer is preferred

Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it's used in a thermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures.
