I’ll answer as a Frenchman who spends a lot of time in Belgium.
I live in Lille, right by the border, which is part of a unique joining France, Flanders and Wallonia. Even though Brussels is 30mns away by train I actually spend more time in Flanders than in Wallonia, in Gent and Antwerpen in particular.
I’ve learned early that speaking English avoids any issue with anyone. Most of the Flemish people I know understand and speak French to a certain extent, but would rather not, which I’ve never judged. It even led to hilarious situations in which I spoke English with French-speakers for years before they discovered that I was French.
What I love most about Belgium is mostly the nightlife (Gent and Antwerpen have such diverse, healthy music scenes that it puts many other major cities to shame) and festivals (Belgium must have the highest ratio of major quality festivals per capita in the world). Belgian youth in particular have great taste in music and know their stuff.
I love the laid-back attitude and overall friendliness of people, the great food (carbonnade, waterzooï, potjevleesch!!!), the great beers (Westvletteren!!!!!!!).
Belgium is too often looked down upon by French people who consider it a weird little cousin, but what I love is the actual identity of it, completely different to anything I know, yet 15mns away from my place.
I deeply think that what makes Lille a great place to live compared to most cities in France, with a reputation of friendliness, openness and quality of life above all, comes from the proximity with Belgium permeating through the non-existing border.
