Why the mountainous regions are less populated

Answere to your question:

The mountains are thinly populated because of harsh climate. The slopes are steep and soil is lack. Plains are more thickly populated than deserts or mountains because Plains are formed by rivers deposits and thus they are fertile and fit for agriculture.

Mountains are less populated than Plateaus or plains because of the following reasons:-

Oxygen level is less on mountains which makes it hard to breathe.

Mountains are not favourable for agriculture.  

The steep slopes make transportation and physical communication difficult.
