It is because of the scanty rainfall received by this region during the monsoon rains . As the leeward side is the rain-shadow area the regions lying in this region receive very little rain from the Arabian sea branch . It is the leeward sides of the ghats that receives the maximum rain.

The parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and the leeward side of western ghats are drought prone because the parts of Rajasthan which falls under rain shadow area of Aravali and Aravali lies parallel.to south west winds, low mountains and Gujarat cannot stop rain bearing clouds and leeward side of western ghats are drought prone as the mountain of western ghats are very high and maximum rain falls on the coastal side rather than leeward side.
