Why the pieces of wood burn faster than a wood?

broken pieces of wood have more surface area and thus provide more surface for ignition

also smaller pieces require less energy to ignite whereas the bigger ones need more.

thus smaller pieces of wood burn faster than bigger ones

If the wood is present in one piece, then, it would consume alot of energy, if it broken, it needs less energy and burns faster
