Certain sections of people are considered ‘untouchable’ because of their occupation. Examples are scavengers, sweepers, washer-men etc. These are considered as ‘polluting’ activities and hence the people engaged in these activities are socially ostracised.
Untouchability is outlawed in India and controlled to a great extent, but this shameful practise continues even today, especially in some backward/remote parts of the country. While the country has grown leaps and bounds in the last decades, a custom like 'untouchability' has not been eradicated completely.
Untouchability is practised in countries like France, Korea and Yemen.
