The compass was an important advance in navigation because it allowed mariners to determine their direction even if clouds obscured their usual astronomical cues such as the North Star.

1- Compass gives direction to follow since we don't have roads on high seas. It shows where is north and the rest follows.
2- There are 2 types of compass we have onboard.
A- Gyro compass: It is a electronic device which shows true north with very high precision.
B- Magnetic compass which shows magnetic north, which differs from true north significantly. You need to add or subtract corrections to its heading to get the direction of true north.
Magnetic compass basically acts as a backup for the gyro Compass.
This heading data obtained from the compass is basically fed into various instruments like Radar,Ecdis,AIS,GMDSS Equipments etc for there proper functioning and record keeping.
And above all , you need a helm order to guide your ship
