Because for a South Indian, English and Hindi are equally foreign. As we all know, the root for the Northern languages is Sanskrit/Prakrit and that for the Southern languages is Ancient Tamil. ... Even those that did not speak Hindi, shared a common root. So it is easier for North Indians to speak Hindi in general.
