To put it simply any unit that is not base units are considered derived units. Base units are mass, length, time, electric current, thermodynamic temperature, substance amount, and luminous intensity. Derived units are units that come from performing a mathematical operation on a base unit. For example to get area you take a length times another length and get square length or area. A square that is 1 meter long and 2 meters wide is 2 m². The SI standard unit of power is the watt. A watt is defined a few different ways but in terms of base units it is (m²kg)/s³.
