Electronic Configuration of Na = [Ne]3s¹

The first electron is removed from 3s orbital. Let the ionisation enthalpy be (IE)1.

After removing 1 electron, configuration becomes

Na = [Ne] (Stable Electronic Configuration)

Since, the second electron is going to be removed from a stable electronic configuration, so it requires more energy {(IE)2}.

That's why Sodium have greater second ionisation energy than first one.

Answer:

since after first ionisation, it attains noble gas configuration,it is favourable, but removing one more electron changes the noble gas configuration, it requires a lot of energy
