Why the soil moisture is to be maintained in soil?

Soil moisture has to be maintained. The moisture is absorbed by the plants for preparing food by photosynthesis. Plants have about 80% water. If there is no moisture in the Soil, the plant is unable to prepare it's own food and dies.
