Why the steps in a food chain are limited to two or four?

Because there are 4 main stages . They are - producer, primary consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers. then there decomposers

There are limited food chain to 2 or 4 because due to the type of animal in the earth. as you know how many types of animal are there. They are:-

1》Carnivorous: Rabbit & Dear etc.

2》herbivorous: Lion & Tiger etc.

3》omnivores: Bear, Humans & Crow etc.

(Herbivorous) As you that herbivorous are those animals who eat grass. As Rabbit & Dear are herbivorous they also eat grass.

(Carnivorus) But animal like Lion & Tiger they eat Flesh and meat of animal like herbivorous.

(Omnivores) Animal like Bear & Crow & also Humans are in the list of omnivores. This animal eat food like vegetable & fruits & meat too.

As omnivores and carnivorous animals are present so they only eat herbivorous animal and herbivorous and grass & insects so there are not types of animals after herbivorous. So there are only three type of animal (note more then three). So, here is your proof that good chain are to two or four.
