During sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere because they are very close to the horizon. Therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away. Most of the red light, which is the least scattered, enters our eyes. Hence, the sun and the sky appear red.

During sunrise or sunset the sun is near the horizon . ... The sun is red in the morning and evening because of Raleigh scattering. White light from thesun is scattered more when the sun is at such a steep angle in the sky. Therefore, only red (long wavelengths) light makes it through all that atmosphere to our eyes.
