The reason is because they react with gases present in air such as 'CARBON-DIOXIDE' & 'OXYGEN' to form 'METAL OXIDE'.

Hope this helps !

the surface of some metal acquired a bland appearance when exposed to Air for a long time because of the chemical process or reaction between the gases and the metal in the atmosphere.
for example - aluminium which tends to form aluminium oxide when it is exposed to air

hope this helps!
