let's take the charge of the ion as -2

in the rule of oxidation number,the sum of the charges is equal to the charge of the ion.

C+(-6)=-2-->(1)

here we don't know the charge of carbon as it can exhibit charge from -4 to +4. By shifting(-6)to the other side,we get:-

=>C=(-2)+6

=>C=+4

Now by substituting this charge of carbon in equation (1),we get:-

+4+(-6)=-2

(-2)=(-2)
