The correct order of grain size in descending order is

(A) Gravel – Sand – Silt – Clay

In the Indian Standard Soil Classification System (ISSCS), soils are classified into groups according to size. The size of the following particles are given below in mm:

1) Gravel : 4.75 - 80 mm

2) Sand : 0.075 - 4.75 mm

3) Silt : 0.002 - 0.075

4) Clay : less than 0.002 mm

Hence we can see that the correct order of grain size in descending order is

(A) Gravel – Sand – Silt – Clay
