why the wall of damage is broad at its base

we know pressure is directly proportional to depth so to avoid any damage to the dam it is made broader at the base as max pressure is experienced by it at its base.

A dam is $\textbf{thicker or broader }$ at its base than at the top beacuse pressure of water is higher near the base of the dam than its top.
