The poet finds a parallel between his attempt to kill the snake and the ancient mariner's killing of the albatross. Just as killing of the harmless bird was a wanton act of the Mariner, the poet feels that his own act was also equally despicable as the snake was as harmless as the albatross. Hence he makes an allusion to the bird.
