At high altitudes, the air density is very low and level of oxygen is less as compared to plains or sea levels. So, as the air is very thin at high altitudes, it is difficult to breath. Therefore, to absorb more oxygen from the atmosphere, the body produces more RBC's and have a higher breathing rate.
