Why there is houses in school like green yellow etc??? what is there purpose???

seee according to me like if we are in a class so we will ve happy and known to the people in oyr class and to some extent we will only do things which concers our class or our classmates .......but in ahouse different people form different class and with different qualities are there....so it can foster the feeling of unity among people from different classes whom we might even don't know
