A activity series helps predict which elements are more likely to cause a reaction than other. Reactivity series lists the element from most reactive to least reactive metals.
Magnesium is more reactive than zinc. So for the equation
Zn + MgSO4
For zinc to displace magnesium it would not be able to since magnesium is 3rd of 4th in the reactivity series way more reactive than Zinc . Therefore no reaction would occur since Zinc would just be in its original form before trying to make the reaction.
