In the story,Old man at the Bridge,the narrator explains the old man's condition by saying ,"There was nothing to do with him" which means that he(narrator) can't do anything.

As you know that the old man was very much concerned about his pets which include a cat,pair of pigeons,goat.The old man did not want to go forward and that was mainly because of two reasons=>

(1)The very first reason was that as he was 70 years of age,he was tired and can't stand up to move forward.

(2) Secondly,he was concerned about his pets whom he left in his hometown.

So,though narrator tried hard to convince him to move forward,the old man refused to do so because of the two reasons explained above.

And thus he concluded this conversation by saying that ,"there was nothing to do with him".
