In Wurtz reaction, alkyl halides react with metallic sodium in dry ether to form alkanes.
Since sodium is basic, tertiary alkyl halides prefer to undergo dehydrohalogenation (elimination) :
Why only tertiary alkyl halides undergo elimination in Wurtz reaction :
Tertiary alkyl halides undergo dehydrohalogenation ( not ‘primary and secondary alkyl halides') because the ease of dehydrohalogenation follows the order :
tertiary alkyl halide > secondary alkyl halide > primary alkyl halidev
