loosening of soil allows the roots to penetrate deep into the soil. fertiliser mix uniformly with loosened soil. loose soil aids the growth of earthworms and microbes . some of these microbes decompose dead plants and animals and help in recycling of nutrients. it provides aeration and drainage .cells in the roots need oxygen to carry out respiration and thus grow . also the deeper the soil is dug , the better is the drainage.
