Transition metal complexes are coloured due to d-d transition

Explanation:

  • Before the attack on metal ion,its d-orbital are degenerate.i.e. have same energy.
  • When a external agent attack on the central metal ion,the degeneracy is broken and split into two set of orbitals t2g(having low energy) and eg(having high energy) .
  • When unpaired electron are present in the low energy level and U.V or visible light is incident on the compound, the electron from t2g to eg.
  • Since, the energy of electron increases in the high energy level so it becomes unstable and comes back to the low energy level releasing energy of wavelength within the visible range.
