Answer:
Plot. Sherlock Holmes receives a cipher message from Fred Porlock, a pseudonymous agent of Professor Moriarty. After Porlock sends the message, however, he changes his mind for fear of Moriarty's discovering that he is a traitor.
Fred Porlock is a petty criminal, working for Professor Moriarty, who occasionally sells information to Sherlock Holmes. The detective likens him to a remora, of no real significance himself, but dancing constant attendance on the great 'shark', James Moriarty.
